Our Story

The Evolution of Move Mountains Physio

Traditionally, physiotherapy has been quite pain-site focused and relied heavily on passive treatment, that is, what we do to you. As a young, keen physiotherapist, though I (Melita) tried my hardest, I found these standard tools and treatments to be somewhat lacking, especially when it came to chronic problems and recurrent injuries.

I’ve always been an active person and I couldn’t handle telling my patients they couldn’t return to sport, or that they needed to come back for treatment every other week to manage their pain if they did.

Luckily in 2012, before I completely lost faith in physiotherapy’s ability to get rid of pain (not just manage it), I stumbled across ConnectTherapy™, a holistic whole-body treatment approach developed by Canadian physio Dr LJ Lee.

ConnectTherapy taught physios to look past the pain-site, assess the whole body and truly identify the root cause of an injury, no matter how far away it was from the pain the patient felt. I loved it, threw myself in, learnt everything I could and even moved to Canada to work in Dr Lee’s own clinic in Vancouver for 2 years.

In 2020, I moved back to Australia as a highly trained and confident ConnectTherapist and started trying to change the expectations of the Australian culture on the long-term efficacy of physiotherapy treatment. Then the pandemic hit and I realised that despite all I had learnt, my patients were still quite dependent on periodic hands-on treatment to keep them on track. This didn’t sit well with me. If some people can get through life active and pain free, why are others so reliant on regular treatment?

I realised that although I could accurately identify where injuries were coming from, why they were occurring, and could use my hands-on skills to help my patients back into good alignment to alleviate their pain, I still didn’t know how to train my patient’s musculoskeletal systems to maintain these changes.

I threw myself into the world of biomechanics and after a few years of further hard learning, worked out how to combine ConnectTherapy’s ability to identify the root cause of injury, with restoring my patient’s optimal biomechanics for true lasting change.

The result is better than I could have hoped for. Not only do we make quick improvements to pain and injury by treating the root cause of the injury, we can make lasting changes to our patient’s movements and postures, which means that pain and problems stay away and they’re not dependent on coming in for maintenance treatment.

By focusing on restoring good biomechanics we can also do all of this with minimal (if any) hands-on treatment, which means we can treat injuries 100% online without our patients ever having to come into the clinic if it’s not convenient for them
